Jubilee’s History
Watch Pastor Steve narrate twenty years of Jubilee’s history along with scenes from past church events and our new building construction.
Jubilee Church started as a call of God in the heart of Steve Grandy, who was living in Red Bluff, California, about fifty miles from Paradise. Steve served four years in the Navy in Viet Nam. Upon returning home, he worked his way up from a boxboy to a Safeway store manager by the age of twenty seven, also acquiring a college degree in business.
After an amazing conversion experience in 1976, Steve eventually stepped down from the store manager position to go into business for himself. He started two successful businesses, one in the rapidly-expanding electronic video game market of the late seventies and eighties and the other in silver and gold reclaiming. During this time Steve and his family began attending Cornerstone Church of God (Cleveland, TN) in Red Bluff.
Then God called him to the pastorate. As his training and internship with the Church of God drew to a close, Steve and his wife Sandy were praying regarding their next step. They felt they were to pioneer a church, rather than take an existing one. In 1987 they moved their family to Paradise, rented a small hall on Sundays, and planted Jubilee, living for the first couple of years on the sale of Steve’s businesses.
The particular building Jubilee now occupies was vacant, and the church which owned it made Pastor Steve a generous deal to be able to rent it, which he did in 1988. The change in location and a couple years of hard work making contacts in the community paid off, and the church grew rapidly in the new location.
The nineties were a decade of rapid growth for the congregation. The sanctuary was remodeled and updated to accommodate the increases. By 1999 the pastors and men of the church had also remodeled the children’s facility and built an administration building adjacent to the sanctuary to house the staff needed to run the church.
The success of these projects encouraged the team to consider expanding the existing sanctuary, but the existing tri-level layout required addressing expensive handicapped access requirements. After consultation and prayer, the church leadership felt it would be more cost effective and attractive to build a new facility.
Pastor Steve has been elected three times by his peers to serve on the State Council of the California-Nevada Church of God. He was further appointed to be the District Overseer of the Northern California district. Most recently, he has been appointed the Regional Elder for our Northern California churches, working with the District Overseers to establish mentoring groups for pastors. The District Mentoring Group Pastor Steve has led successfully for the past eight years has been vitally involved in planting two churches and organizing District Children’s Camps and other regional activities.
